Kent SANDS mosaic by Jo Letchford mosaic artist, Folkestone, Kent, Ashford, Baby Memorial Garden August 2013
Jo was delighted to attend the recent opening of the Kent Sands baby memorial garden in Ashford, Kent. The garden, situated within Ashford's Memorial Gardens is packed with bright uplifting plants and features the stunning central mosaic surrounded by stones bearing the names of over sixty babies.
Chris Twydell of Kent SANDS said:
“We were delighted with Jo's work on the mosaic which is the centrepiece of our Baby Memorial Garden in Ashford. Jo really understood what we wanted from the the project, and the obvious sensitivities, and worked with bereaved families at a community event where local people were able to help create the mosaic. Jo undertook the outline and the more detailed aspects of the mosaic and we are so pleased with the results.”

Jo is currently working on a private commission and will be working on a mosaic with Broadstairs Baptist Church in September.

Jo Letchford, mosaic artist working on the SANDS mosaic commission March 2013
Jo has just finished her latest project. The mosaic was commissioned by the Chartham branch of the national charity Stillbirth And Neonatal Deaths (SANDS), and will form the centrepiece of the Baby Garden memorial space in Ashford town centre. It was created by Jo in a way which enabled families to be actively involved in placing the tesserae in this lasting memorial. It was a moving and empowering experience for all those involved. The mosaic is currently being cast and should be in place in the garden from Easter. Thanks to photographer Graham Baker for allowing us to use his photograph of Jo working on the mosaic. To find out more about SANDS please click here. More pictures will follow when completed.

"My Mosaic Course with Jo Letchford was booked for me as a Christmas present from my daughter. It is the best present anyone could have bought me! My daughter and I both had such a wonderful day. Jo was wonderful, a delightful teacher with a witty sense of humour. She allowed us free expression in our work, which for us both is really important. She is inspirational and generous. We came away thrilled with our work. I would highly recommend her to anyone interested in pursuing a new craft or hobby. She has an excellent display of her exquisite work on display. She has a good selection of tools, kits, tiles and books for sale.
Highly recommend, we shall be visiting again!"

Jo Letchford working on the restoration of a large mosaic on the seafront in Dover, Kent October 2010
Jo has recently been involved in restoring Dover's seafront mosaic. 'It was great to be working on such a large mosaic that has been part of Dover's seafront for years. It is a most unusual mosaic map and shows Dover's relationship to England and the continent. The mosaic is clearly popular with both locals and visitors who expressed an interest in what I was doing. Several people said how pleased they are that good care is being taken of the mosaic and many people remember bringing their children to see it over the years.'
